For a moment, imagine you are running a tokenized Treasury fund. Your investors operate in a market that never closes. Subscriptions can arrive on a Saturday night. Redemption requests can show up at 2:00 a.m. And the people making those requests expect the token, the cash and the underlying value to move with the same speed as everything else in the digital-asset market. You take in the cash. You issue the token. Then you go to put that money to work in the short-term Treasury market. And that market is closed. The same problem can show up in reverse. An investor redeems at an odd hour, so you need to sell Treasuries, move the proceeds through the banking system and settle the transaction. Parts of that process may be closed too. That is the gap BNY appears to be trying to close. According to Bloomberg, BNY plans to introduce tokenized Treasuries and conduct pilot trades on its private blockchain by the end of 2026. It is also aiming to support 24/7 settlement for both conventional and tokenized Treasuries in 2027. Supporting the tokenized side of that equation does not strike me as the most surprising part. Extending the same operating model into the conventional Treasury market does. This is no longer just about creating a digital version of a Treasury security. It is about the operating demands of digital markets beginning to push directly into one of the largest and most important traditional markets in the world. The tokens may be new. The underlying assets are not. But once investors expect the token to move around the clock, the pressure starts building on everything behind it to do the same. Views are my own and not necessarily those of my employer.
