Emanuel Wilson Ready for First NFL Start
Green Bay Packers running back Emanuel Wilson (23) is set to make his first NFL start against the Minnesota Vikings. This opportunity arises as the team's preferred starter, Josh Jacobs, will be inactive due to a knee injury. Wilson, a third-year player, expressed his readiness, noting that his last start was during his redshirt junior season at Fort Valley State in 2022.
A Look at Wilson's Performance
Wilson has served as a reliable backup since joining the Packers. In his rookie year in 2023, he recorded 502 rushing yards on 103 carries, averaging 4.9 yards per carry, and scored four touchdowns. He also contributed with 11 receptions and a receiving touchdown. This season, through 10 games, Wilson has accumulated 220 rushing yards on 53 carries (4.2 average) and has 11 receptions. Notably, during the Packers' Week 11 win against the New York Giants, Wilson carried the ball 11 times for 40 yards and a touchdown, adding one catch for nine yards after Jacobs exited the game.
Coaching Perspective
Head coach Matt LaFleur commented on Wilson's development, stating, "There was a lot to learn coming from where he came from to where he is now. But I think he's embraced that, he's embraced the challenge, and then he's maximized his opportunities." LaFleur highlighted Wilson's growth and his ability to capitalize on the chances he's been given.
Wilson's Journey to the NFL
Emanuel Wilson's path to the NFL has been one of perseverance. He grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and began his collegiate football career at Division II Johnson C. Smith University. After a strong freshman year, he transferred to Fort Valley State University. In his 2022 season at Fort Valley State, Wilson showcased his talent with 1,371 rushing yards, 239 receiving yards, and a total of 19 touchdowns.
Wilson participated in Fort Valley State's pro day ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, demonstrating good athleticism with a 4.55-second 40-yard dash, a 34.5-inch vertical jump, and a 10-foot broad jump. Despite going undrafted in 2023, he signed with the Green Bay Packers on May 22 after a brief stint with the Denver Broncos. His impressive training camp performance earned him a spot on the Packers' 53-man roster.
Confidence and Growth
Wilson reflected on his personal growth and increased confidence: "I just believe in myself more, so I got more confidence now than like my rookie year. To now, it's a huge difference. I mean, y'all guys can go watch film to see how I play differently now. I just feel good." He has moved up the depth chart, becoming the No. 2 back behind Jacobs this season.
Looking Ahead
The Packers are optimistic that Josh Jacobs will be healthy enough to play when the team travels to Detroit to face the Lions on Thursday. Until then, Emanuel Wilson is poised to lead the backfield.
