I have been researching Real World Assets (RWA), tokenisation and Web3 fintech products lately because of the work we are doing on global MPC and Ghana keeps coming up. Last week, Ghana’s SEC published the 20 companies currently testing virtual asset products in its regulatory sandbox. What caught my attention was the range of real-world assets involved: gold, Treasury bills, bonds, securities and trade finance are all being explored on-chain. This week, Ghana took another step by setting up a Virtual Assets Coordinating Committee across the Bank of Ghana, SEC, Ministry of Finance, Cyber Security Authority and Financial Intelligence Centre. The goal is to coordinate how these products are supervised as the country moves towards fully implementing its virtual asset framework. Working on GlobalMPC made this much less abstract for me. Trying to understand how mining assets could move on-chain, it became obvious very quickly that the token was only one part of the problem. There is still the actual mine, the data around it, who verified that data, who owns what, how custody works, what is already real, what is still planned and what an investor should actually trust. That is where I started finding RWA more interesting. The harder part is making sure the digital version of the asset does not look more certain than the real-world information behind it actually is. So when I read Ghana was bringing the Bank of Ghana, SEC, Ministry of Finance and other agencies into the same conversation, it makes sense. These products sit across too many layers for one part of the system to prove trust to the users. At GobalMPC, we’re exploring some of these problems, starting with mining assets, and we’ve opened the waitlist for anyone curious about where RWA could go from here. https://lnkd.in/ee2henRm
